Honduran Emergency Travel Document (Salvoconducto)

When a Honduran is left without a passport and needs to travel immediately, the salvoconducto can be the solution. It is an emergency travel document, with limited validity, that the Honduran consulate may issue to allow, above all, the return to the country when there is no time to process a normal passport. In this guide we explain what it is, when it is issued, what steps to follow and why it does not replace the passport.

⚠️ This is an urgent procedure: if you have lost your passport or it was stolen and you have imminent travel, contact your consulate immediately. Each office decides based on the case. We do not publish fixed requirements because they vary: always confirm with your consulate or at citaconsular.sreci.gob.hn.

What the salvoconducto is

The salvoconducto is a provisional travel document that a State issues to its nationals abroad when, due to an emergency, they cannot have their passport. Its purpose is very specific: to allow a particular journey, normally the return to Honduras.

  • It has limited validity and usually serves for a single trip.
  • The consulate issues it after assessing your identity, nationality and the urgency.
  • It is not an everyday identity document or a passport.

When a salvoconducto is issued

It is not a routine procedure: it is reserved for urgent situations in which there is no room for a passport's normal timeframe. The most common cases are:

  • Passport lost or stolen just before or during a trip.
  • Expired passport with no time to renew before an urgent return.
  • Family emergency in Honduras (death, serious illness) requiring immediate travel.
  • Other exceptional circumstances the consulate assesses.

Note: issuance depends on the consulate and each case. Not all situations qualify and, when there is time, the right path is to process the normal passport.

Why it does not replace the passport

It is important not to confuse the salvoconducto with the passport. They are different documents:

  • The passport is your stable travel and identity document, valid for several years.
  • The salvoconducto is one-off: it covers a specific trip and expires quickly.
  • After using the salvoconducto and returning to Honduras, you must process your passport normally.

So whenever you have time to spare, the best option is to renew the passport. The salvoconducto is an emergency resource, not a shortcut.

Documents usually requested

The exact requirements vary by office, but to prove your identity, your nationality and the urgency, it is usually wise to gather:

  • Any proof of Honduran identity and nationality you have (passport copy, identity document, birth certificate…).
  • Police report if the passport was stolen or lost.
  • Proof of travel (tickets, itinerary) and of the urgent reason (certificates, etc.).
  • Photographs, if the office requests them.

Confirm the specific checklist with your consulate: the more documentation you bring, the faster the assessment of your case.

If your passport was stolen

Theft or loss of the passport is one of the most frequent reasons to need a salvoconducto. If it happens to you:

  1. Report the theft to the local police and keep the report document.
  2. Notify your consulate so it is on record and they can guide you on the steps.
  3. If you have imminent travel, raise the need for a salvoconducto to return to Honduras.
  4. On returning, process a new Honduran passport.

Frequently asked questions about the salvoconducto

What exactly is a salvoconducto?

It is an emergency travel document, with limited validity, that the consulate may issue so a Honduran can return to their country when they have no passport due to loss, theft or expiration and need to travel urgently. It is not an everyday identity document.

Can I use it to travel to any country?

It is normally intended for a specific journey, above all the return to Honduras. It is not a substitute for the passport to travel freely. If your plan is different, explain it to the consulate to learn what options you have.

How long does it take to issue?

Being an emergency procedure, consulates usually prioritize it, but the time depends on each office and the documentation you provide. That is why it is key to make contact as soon as possible and bring all proof of your identity and the urgency.

Do I need a police report if my passport was stolen?

In general it is wise to have the theft or loss report: it backs up what happened and speeds up the consulate's assessment. Keep the report document and bring it along with any proof of your Honduran identity.

After the salvoconducto, what do I do about my passport?

The salvoconducto only covers the emergency trip. Once the urgency is resolved, you must process your Honduran passport normally to have your ordinary travel and identity document again. See our passport guide.
