Honduran DNI in the U.S.: Enrollment Abroad

The DNI (National Identification Document, Documento Nacional de Identificación) is the official identity card of Hondurans and the basis for proving who you are before the authorities of Honduras. For Hondurans living in the United States, obtaining or updating the DNI involves a process called enrollment abroad, in which the National Registry of Persons (RNP) captures your biometric data. In this guide we explain what the DNI is, what enrollment involves, how it differs from the consular ID, the general requirements and how to start it from the U.S.

ℹ️ Important: the availability of enrollment, the exact requirements, fees and timeframes depend on the RNP and on each consulate, and may change. This page is for guidance only: always confirm the current steps with your consulate, at citaconsular.sreci.gob.hn or with the National Registry of Persons (RNP). Be wary of anyone charging to "speed up" an official, personal procedure.

What the Honduran DNI is

The National Identification Document (DNI) is the identity card of Honduran citizens, issued by the National Registry of Persons (RNP). It is the document that officially proves your identity as a Honduran and is used for many procedures: voting, dealing with institutions in Honduras, banking or property matters, and as proof of national identity.

Because it is a biometric document, issuing it requires capturing your photo, your fingerprints and your signature. That is why Hondurans abroad need to go through the enrollment process to obtain or update it without traveling to Honduras.

What enrollment abroad is

Enrollment is the process by which the RNP captures your biometric data (photo, fingerprints and signature) and verifies your information to issue or update your DNI. When you live outside Honduras, this registration is carried out, depending on availability, at the consulate or at enrollment drives organized by the Honduran authorities.

  • It is done in person, because your biometric data must be taken.
  • It usually requires an appointment through CitaConsular or registration for a drive.
  • It works both for a first DNI and for updates or renewals.

The availability of enrollment abroad can vary throughout the year and between consulates. That is why it is key to confirm dates and availability before planning your visit.

Honduran DNI vs. consular ID

It is common to confuse the two documents, but they serve different purposes and are complementary:

🪪 Honduran DNI

Issued by the RNP. It is your national identity document as a Honduran, valid inside and outside the country for official procedures in Honduras.

🗂️ Consular ID

Issued by the consulate. It is an identification card useful for everyday tasks in the U.S.; it does not replace the DNI.

See consular ID →

In practice, it is best to have both: the DNI identifies you as a Honduran citizen before Honduras and the consular ID helps you in your day-to-day life in the United States.

General requirements

The exact documents depend on the RNP and your consulate, but as a guideline the following are usually requested:

  • Honduran birth certificate, especially for first-time applications. Guide: birth certificate.
  • Previous DNI, if this is a renewal or update.
  • Appointment confirmation or registration for the enrollment drive.
  • Payment of the applicable fee, where it applies.

Note: since it is a biometric document, the photo, fingerprints and signature are captured at the time of enrollment, so you usually do not need to bring photos. Verify the exact checklist with your consulate before going.

How to start the procedure from the United States

  1. Confirm availability: check whether your consulate offers enrollment or announces drives for the DNI.
  2. Gather your documents: birth certificate, previous DNI (if renewing) and anything your office indicates.
  3. Book an appointment at citaconsular.sreci.gob.hn, choosing the U.S. and your consulate, or sign up for the drive.
  4. Attend the enrollment: there they take your biometric data and verify your information.
  5. Wait for the DNI delivery: the timeframe and delivery method depend on the RNP and your consulate.

Enrollment drives and availability

In addition to regular service at the office, consulates sometimes organize enrollment drives, occasionally traveling to cities with large Honduran communities. These drives are a good opportunity if you do not have a consulate nearby:

  • Check your consulate's official channels for the dates and locations of the drives.
  • Sign up as soon as they are announced, because slots are usually limited.
  • Have your documentation ready to make the most of your slot.

If you are unsure which consulate corresponds to you, check it on the home page and also review the how to book an appointment guide.

Frequently asked questions about the Honduran DNI

Can I get or renew the DNI without traveling to Honduras?

In many cases yes, thanks to enrollment abroad carried out by the RNP at consulates or at drives. Availability varies by consulate and time of year, so confirm dates and requirements before planning your visit.

Does the DNI replace the consular ID?

No. The DNI is your national identity document as a Honduran, issued by the RNP. The consular ID is a card issued by the consulate and is useful for everyday tasks in the U.S. They are different and complementary documents; ideally you should have both.

What do I need for my first DNI?

For a first application you usually need your Honduran birth certificate and the appointment or drive confirmation. Since biometric data is taken at enrollment, you usually do not need to bring photos. Confirm the exact checklist with your consulate.

How much does the DNI cost and how long does it take?

The fee and delivery time depend on the RNP and your consulate, and may change. Do not rely on figures circulating without an official source: confirm the cost and estimated time with your consulate or at citaconsular.sreci.gob.hn before starting.

Do I need the DNI to get the Honduran passport?

The Honduran DNI or identity document is one of the usual ways to prove your identity and nationality when applying for the passport. Keeping your DNI and your birth certificate up to date makes other consular procedures easier. See our Honduran passport guide for more detail.
